In 1977, through the intermediary of Jean Tinguely, Jacques Halbert exhibited at the Dritte Gallery in Zofingen, Switzerland, a space then run by the painter Christoph Gossweiler. Alongside a series of paintings, Halbert presented, for the first time in a public his Cherry Museum. This was not a museum in the institutional sense, but rather an expanding artistic project composed of everyday objects gathered around a single motif: the cherry.
The Cherry Museum consisted of a wide variety of objects (clothing, tableware, books, games, and decorative items) all marked by the presence of the cherry as a graphic or decorative motif, although none of these objects had been painted or produced by the artist himself. The collection was assembled through both donations from friends and objects collected by Jacques Halbert, thereby introducing an essential relational and participatory dimension to the project.
